Eating Bugs

By JJ Eating Bugs

I am learning to: Persuade people by writing.

Have you been sad that when it's dinner time? It's always the same things over and over?
I feel like I’ve eaten everything in the world! But did you know there's always nice healthy bugs you can cook with! If your a normal guy and think “YUCKY! I DON'T WANT TO EAT BUGS!” After you read this I believe you will be like “YAY, I WANT BUGS FOR DINNER!” There are lots of reasons why eating insects are very good for you because they are healthy, low in fat and you can eat as much as you like and not gain more weight! When some bugs are cooked they dont look like bugs anymore! Also there are lots of recipes all over the world and some even have chocolate in them!

Are you scared that we are running out of meat to eat? Well do you know that if we start eating bugs now we will save lots of meat! Don’t worry if we run out of bugs because there is approximately 10 quintillion(1,000,000,000,000,000,000) bugs on earth! So that means that there is a ratio of 200 million bugs to one human! The more bugs the better! If we start eating bugs we will have lots and lots of more animals! Also there's lots of recipes to cook bugs like chocolate covered crickets and other lollies with bugs in them!

Are your sick and tired of the same recipes over and over again! Well if you switch to bugs there is unlimited access to truckloads of recipes to cook with from all around the world! And they all taste very yummy! Just like normal cookies and cake just with a tasteless bug in it! Bugs are very very healthy for you because they are low on calories and have the same protein as an egg!

As you can see cooking with bugs is very very fun and easy to have super tasty dinner for as long as you like! But remember that's not all! They are healthy and packed with good stuff! Making bugs for your dinner is like going to the gym only you don’t feel anything! This is why I strongly recommend cooking with bugs!

Our Reading was 1 John 3:16-18, we also presented a song that we put lyrical dances moves to our song was: So will I, by Hillsong. This is the song: So will I was ok.

Kapa Haka

Mana, power and pride would be a few words to describe the feeling as the Good Shepherd School Kapa Haka group took the stage. During the weekend a large group of year 5 and 6 students took to the stage to perform at the Eden Albert Cultural Festival. There were a few nerves before we started but once we were underway the excitement of performing kicked in. We felt proud as a team to perform for so many people. Kia Kaha! The highlight of Kapa Haka for me was the haka.

Athletics Day!

Athletics:

The harder the battle the sweeter the victory!

All of Good Shepherd School piled into buses as we headed to Three Kings Fields for the annual Athletics Day event. We had been training for weeks and we were ready to take on our peers and to compete for a placing. The events were running, long jump, high jump, discus and shot put. My favourite event was high jump!

Last Assembly!

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."

Week 5 was non stop for Room 6 with athletics, kapa haka and irish dancing. But it was also our final assembly for the year, and for some of us our final assembly at Good Shepherd School. This was the perfect time for us to share some of our talents and learning. We had been focusing on New Zealand music through our passport tasks so it was only fitting to pick a kiwi classic; Six Months in a Leaky Boat by Split Enz (written in 1982). We sung along to the words and put some of groovy moves together to create a dance. Throughout the year one of our favourite activities was reading Chris Gurney’s books during book week. Chris has written so many wonderful and humourous traditional tales with a kiwi voice. We absolutely adore her books, so for our assembly we presented a Readers Theatre: Trev and the Kauri Tree.

My Kiwi Information Report

I am learning to inform my audience through an information report

Did you know that there is more than one type of kiwi that lives in New Zealand? There are actually 5 different types of kiwi. The North Island Brown Kiwi, Southern Brown Kiwi, Little Spotted Kiwi, Great Spotted Kiwi and the Okarito Kiwi. Kiwis are also the only birds with nostrils on the end of their beak. Kiwis are brown in colour and about the size of a chicken that want to fly but can't because their wings are too small to take off and they are from an ancient group of birds called ratites. This group of birds can't fly, so it's a mystery how the kiwi got to New Zealand because it can’t fly. The kiwi needs many things to survive, such as a healthy diet.

So what do kiwis eat? Well seeing as a kiwi is an omnivore they eat lots of small bugs and berries. They like many types of worms their favorite is earthworm, which is very good because New Zealand is rich in worms, most birds like worms. The Kiwi’s food also consists of fruit, seeds, crayfish, eels and amphibians. A fun fact is that people have also given kiwis actual kiwifruit and the kiwis ate it! But of course, the kiwi will need to find there food in their natural habitat.

The Kiwi is quite adaptable to a range of different habitats as they live in a varied range of habitats all cross New Zealand. From holes in forest floor, to snowy places and rough farm landings they will find anywhere to live like dams, dark wetlands with a river. A habitat is important as it needs to provide all their needs within the area they live. A good habitat will provide them with their favourite food, give them places to hide from predators and be able to rest. New Zealand has organised an island for only kiwis to try and breed the kiwi to keep their population up, this island has no threats or predators to help keep the kiwi alive.

Unfortunately the Kiwi is hunted by lots of things. The kiwis predators are wild dogs, cats, possums, ferrets and rats. They all kill kiwis for food, and the kiwi is easy food for these predators as they are on the forest floor and only have the use of camouflage to protect themselves. The kiwi is also found easily because of a their strong smell. Fortunately there are many places that are developing ways to protect the kiwi, so the kiwi will be able to live a long life. People can also do their bit to help save the kiwi by killing rats, setting up ferret traps and possum traps, taking wild pigs to farms and keep your dog on a leash when your walking through the kiwis natural habitats.

In conclusion the kiwis is special creature, that is an important image to New Zealand and we need to make sure they are able to survive many years to come. They need to survive by having access to a healthy range of food and a good place to live that meets all their requires and they are safe from dangerous predators. We need to make changes to make sure we protect the endangered kiwi. We need to keep our national bird and make New Zealand be known for this amazing bird.
